wow great idea but the reason why its so loud is the bearings in the motor are bad

LOL bro that’s hilarious. This video is 9 years old, at which time that shop vac was 4 years old. It’s STILL running like an absolute champ. But I appreciate the input!

I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. If you just let the table open or close on it's own and don't force anything, it works great ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh Once it's set up, it's pretty solid. My only gripe would probably be related to the clamps provided. They're not the highest quality. They do the job, so no big deal, but they could be better. All in all, pretty cool gadget.

This was really helpful. I have built somethings out of MDF and now am having fun finishing them. This answered my question about whether I shoudl use glue + water or shellac to seal it. Looks like shellac is the way to go.

It's a shame you don't do videos. Very informative, very helpful. Helping me with a project I'm working on right now. You sell yourself short. You would do very well for yourself by making more videos. I hope someday you will do this regularly.

Hey @russhaynes I bought some furniture for my bedroom and only after I learned that particle board continuously off gases. I was looking into ways to seal it if possible to stop the off gassing. Do you have any tips? And is shellac the best option? Thanks!

Nice cart but that is not how grounding works fwiw. You can drive a copper rod into the ground 6 feet and still not have a good ground, that's why they are required to be 8 foot long. A zinc plated washer touching a concrete floor is providing almost zero grounding benefit.

Interesting, but would have been much more so with some pictures of the baffle as that seemed to be the primary point.

Place some old carpet strips inside the cabinet and directly aligned with the exit port. Place a series of baffles between the exit port and bottom cabinet opening. these should cut your noise levels even more. I am now working on my shop and just placed a central vacuum. dealing with same challenge....need a Db reader. Love your cabinet work and it really shows you care about your equipment.

Ok hi. I’m a Girl. And I don’t know a lot of wood stuff yet. And I have no friends. But anyways. Say I use this SHELLAC stuff for all this MDF I bought for $10 a 4’x8’ .. sheet thing. Each. Yeah day I SHELLAC it & then… like.. do I need to use only a certain kind of paint over the SHELLAC or am I pretty much good to go on any kind of paint I want to paint over itv

    • @ishtlutz1261
      @ishtlutz1261 2 роки тому

Oh. & also… say I … SHELLAC’d & painted the MDF & then painted it… what if I just… threw a full open beer at it? Or splashed a big cup of water on it… what would happen? And oh. They say that MDF isn’t very good with holding screws & stuff in it.. well.. ok. Do you know of a better way to… connect pieces of Mdf together that isn’t screws? Or .. Is it because screws are metal? Then… why don’t they just invent like… WOODEN SCREWS…. But the more like WOODEN BOLTS… with the little nut thing to secure it on the other end or… nevermind that idea. Umm. But wooden nails.. or wooden nails.. do they have those? Would that be.better for MDF? And…. What do you think it’d be like if I … built an entire 15ft wide garage well with … a whole full wall of different height cabinets/counter tops some over head cabinets/some desk or counter tops (like 2), drawers &.. some empty space under the table tops to roll a pull Out work bench I make under it when I’m done with it to save space. If I mix in an actual piece of real wood & there & build it on a pressure treated based foundation …. Would MDF be suitable for a wall of storage & function use?

Do you have any experiencing painting over shellac? I accidentally stripped the laminate off a dresser top and am left with the thin MDF sheet, so I used shellac to seal it, then painted it but the MDF is absorbing the paint and showing that grainy texture and feeling which suggests to me that I didn't seal it enough. Can I add a layer of shellac then continue painting? Maybe even layer? Trying to get the dresser top to be wood like or at least smooth and not MDF looking.

Nice Job on the Bench Russ! Love that unique Double screw Vise was it Pricey? that is so Cool I hate to Ask, but want to know total price of build of Bench? .Did You say the Twin Screw Vice does not Rack ? have You tried and irregular shape piece in it Yet? I know You look through a Whole bundle of 2X4 Stock to find pretty straight pieces. It is a real shame you cannot get #1 quality in construction Grade lumber anymore. Now that you build it keep the Sawdust flowing. BTW You might want to Looks at Bob Chase similar Bench at New Generation Workbench. He took a piece of Hardware cloth and shape it to the Contour of the center tool troth and use His Vacuum to pull Sawdust out without removing needed Tools. Bob will be Missed...Kay

Jeff King Thanks for the question, Jeff. Yes, the vise is still on my bench and I still use it all the time. I still love it as much as I did the day I got it working. I’m not sure why they never really took off. Perhaps price was an issue for some.

That is not a good ground. Not even for static. Also, line the box with carpet to really kill the noise level.

The reason that your shop vac sounds like that is because the motor fan is dirty. You have to take it apart to clean it. I would say it has probably been used without a filter. You allways need a dry filter for dust ect and a wet filter for water

Good job on the build. Much better than before the noise reduction is awesome. I put my dust deputy and shop vac up by the front of the garage entry and use a hose reel (fast cap plywood reel) with 25 foot of pool hose on it I would like to reduce the noise and am thinking of a enclosure much like yours with the baffle. The washer idea will disapate the static charge. Yet if the metal switch box is grounded it would work even better. I found the static charge to build up on mainly on long runs of plastic and after long runs of the larger hp vacs. Not as much on the smaller shop vacs. I don't have mine grounded.

    • @MarkJonesRanger

Well I built one today. Used a CNC to make a 23" by 23" by 23" cube with 2" box joints using quarter inch plywood. I lined that with 1' blue 4x8 foam board. I then made a 4.5" by 23" by 23" baffle box that will mount on top of this cube. The heat from the shop vac and the expelled air will travel through this baffle to the rear of the vac and blowout to the wall. I used 4" strips of quarter inch plywood inside the baffle box and split the expelled air down two separate zig zag shoots that were 3.5" by 4" tall and about 8 foot long of maze on each one. It's doing a good job and dropped the noise level considerably. The heat is rising and being expelled out the top through the baffle. Posting a youtube video on it as we speak. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

You are totally right! Well sorted construction grade lumber can be great to work with and can be quite beautiful. The trick is to look at what the lumber store has every time you go there. Sometimes it will be a turd. Sometimes it will be surprisingly good. When you find good wood, buy a BUNCH. A planer can really surprise you with what it does. Thank you for the hardware tip. Great stuff.... Let the bench madness begin!

Nice work, man. My favorite roubo vid so far. HINT for working with structural lumber: Skip over the 2x4's and instead get 2x8's or 2x12's and rip 'em. You'll find much better wood that way.

Budget? ..... Maybe if talking about the material... But the skill, the planning, the painstaking attention to detail... No way is " budget " it took you 2 months to build this bench, it's taking me 2 years to build mine.. Maybe be its due to your skill ... But you didn't acquire those skills building this bench, it took you years and countless mistakes to accomplish the skill you have, as for me ... it's going to take my dumb ass more than countless mistakes to learn the many skills of wood working. Nice video but the bench steals the show, nice work good luck to ya. Cheers and jeers from New York.wish me luck... Here's me doing wood working.. " dame it !!! I swear I measure it 3 times..." Back to Home Depot for more wood to make more mistakes... Budget, budget my ass.
